Working hours holidays: a dated, sourced directory

Working hours holidays in 2027: the closure dates that move deadlines, who publishes each one, and how to check the list your filing depends on.

A working hours holiday is a date when the body that set your obligation is closed. That body decides the date, publishes it, and can move it. A list copied from a general page carries no publisher and no issue date, so it cannot settle a deadline.

The dates below are the ones most North American filing, payroll and delivery calendars are built on. Each entry names who publishes it. Verify against that publisher before you rely on it.

What to take away

  • A closure only matters if the body that set your obligation observes it. The CRA, a state court and a courier do not share one list.
  • Statutory dates are fixed by instrument, not custom. The United States sets its federal days in 5 U.S.C. 6103.
  • When a fixed date lands on a weekend, the observed day moves. Which direction it moves is set by the same instrument.
  • Partial days (early close, late open) have no day-level representation. They need an hours window, described under working hours.
  • Store the publisher, scope, effective period and retrieval date beside every date you use.
  • Seventeen 2027 closures are listed below, from New Year's Day on Friday, January 1 to Boxing Day observed on Tuesday, December 28.

Four rows show the substitution rule at work. Independence Day 2027 falls on a Sunday, so the US observes Monday, July 5. Christmas 2027 falls on a Saturday, so both countries observe Monday, December 27. Canada then observes Boxing Day on Tuesday, December 28. Juneteenth lands on Saturday, June 19, 2027 and is observed Friday, June 18.

Eleven 2027 dates are federal in the United States. Federal offices, courts and the Postal Service close on each, and the securities markets take most of the same days. The list runs from New Year's Day on Friday, January 1 to Christmas observed on Monday, December 27.

Canada's federal list under the Holidays Act covers ten 2027 dates. Federally regulated employers, banks and Canada Post close on them. Good Friday, Victoria Day and Boxing Day sit on the Canadian list and nowhere on the US federal one.

Provincial and state lists diverge. Good Friday is a statutory holiday in most Canadian provinces and a state holiday in several US states. Civic Holiday on Monday, August 2, 2027 is set by Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, not by Ottawa. Remembrance Day is statutory in most provinces but not Ontario, Quebec or Nova Scotia.

Where each list actually lives

The governing calendar belongs to whoever set the obligation: the receiving body for a filing, the settlement system for a payment, the employer for staffing.

US federal days come from statute, compiled and published through official channels such as the Government Publishing Office's Statutes at Large collection. Canadian federal days sit in the Holidays Act, R.S.C. 1985, c. H-5. Provincial and state days sit in their own employment standards legislation.

How those instruments are assembled into a usable table is under how closure calendars are made. Partial days rarely appear in any statute. They come from an organization's own policy, which is the least likely place to be machine-readable.

Market operators keep a separate list. The New York Stock Exchange closes on Good Friday, April 2, 2027, a date the federal government does not take.

Holding a date so it can be checked

Field / What it prevents

Publisher
Two lists disagreeing with no way to say which governs
Scope
A national list applied to a local schedule
Effective period
Last year's list reused without anyone deciding to
Retrieved on
A stale answer mistaken for a broken formula
Version
Two people quoting one list and meaning different things
Source citation
A date whose publisher cannot be produced on request

Store the recorded answer beside the version that produced it. An hours figure with no schedule version cannot be reproduced, and one that cannot be reproduced gets recomputed later against a different list.

Fields to record for each date

  • Publisherwho governs the list
  • Scopenational or local
  • Effective periodwhich year applies
  • Retrieved onwhen you checked
  • Versionwhich list edition
  • Source citationthe instrument, not a screenshot

Cite the instrument, not the page that reprinted it. The citation 5 U.S.C. 6103 travels with the date. A screenshot of a calendar app does not.

The interaction nobody tests

A closure and a clock change can fall in the same week. They interact through the window, not the date.

A daytime window is unaffected: the transition happens in the small hours. An overnight window shifts by an hour on those two dates a year. Add a closure the day before and the week's total moves for two unrelated reasons at once.

Test them separately, then together. Transition rules are published by each region's timekeeping body; the US version is set out by NIST. Canada's come from the National Research Council.

The day-level version of this question is under counting a month. The layered case, where several calendars govern at once, is under state and regional calendars.

Common questions

Why does the observed date differ from the printed date?

Because the statute that fixes the holiday also fixes what happens when it lands on a weekend. In 2027, Christmas falls on a Saturday and is observed on Monday, December 27. Juneteenth falls on Saturday, June 19 and is observed Friday, June 18. Check the instrument, not the calendar app.

Is Good Friday a federal holiday in the United States?

No. It is observed in many states and by Canadian provinces, but it is not on the US federal list at 5 U.S.C. 6103. Whether it closes your counterparty is a question for that counterparty.

Do Canada and the United States share the same 2027 closures?

Only four overlap on the federal lists: New Year's Day, Labour Day, Christmas observed and Boxing Day observed. Canada also takes Good Friday, Victoria Day and Thanksgiving in October. The US also takes Juneteenth and Thanksgiving in November.

Which 2027 deadline moves because of a weekend?

The information-return deadline of January 31, 2027 falls on a Sunday, so it moves to Monday, February 1, 2027. The standard rule shifts any due date landing on a weekend or a legal holiday to the next business day.

Should a half day count as 0.5 in a day-based report?

Only if the report says so, and even then the underlying record should hold the actual window. Half a day is a summary, and summaries should be derived rather than stored.

How far ahead can a partial-day schedule be trusted?

Less far than a statutory list, because partial days are set by policy and change without an instrument to announce them. Recompute rather than carry forward.
